Overview

For this project, understanding the target audience and delving into the brand's history are essential steps in crafting an authentic rebrand for Hourglass Collectibles, a beloved comic shop in Port Moody, British Columbia.

Research

Research was undertaken to gather key information about the business, including its goals, establishment date, history, and ownership. Additionally, research on the Port Moody area was conducted to tailor the marketing and branding strategies to the local demographic most likely to frequent the store. I also visited Hourglass in person to gain insights into the customer experience as well as documenting all existing graphics and visual elements.

A research report was created, including Client Info, Products and Services, Problems, Design Strategy, Demographic, Target Groups, Personas, SWOT, Competing Business, and a Differentiation Strategy.

Strengths

Community connection with great products and a vast selection of goods, from comics, to cards, to toys.

Weakness

Outdated design in person and online, inconsistent social media channels and outdated website.

Opportunities

Grow the audience with a modern overhaul for the store, website, and socials for an easy and refreshing experience.

Threats

Falling behind other local comic stores in terms of progressing with social media reach and modernized design.

With all research in mind, the early development phase commenced. This phase began with crafting a positioning statement, defining key messages, and brainstorming new names (with the original name being Hourglass Comics). Next, I created mood boards showcasing comic art environments, illustrations, and other comic store logos.

A mind map was developed to capture historical facts, strengths, competition, brand associations, customer profiles, messages, and advantages. Using these insights, initial logo variations were designed.

Focused Development

After refining the logo variations, a comprehensive style guide was created to define the brand's colors, typography, and key themes, showcasing the current designs. Additionally, stationary mockups were developed and presented to ensure cohesive branding across all materials
