Overview

"Never Understand" began with the atmospheric pads featured in the intro, setting a tone for the entire track. I built a simple yet expressive chord progression around that sound, aiming for something that could switch between calming and energetic. From there, the track evolved naturally, layering intertwining arpeggios, big leads, and rich melodies that complement each other seamlessly. The chord progression develops patiently as the track progresses, creating a sense of anticipation and movement that carries the listener through each section. It's a piece that I feel captures the old school essence of Progressive House while also bringing some new elements to the table.

Throughout most of the production process, I knew I wanted vocals to be an integral part of the track. I used placeholder vocals during the early and mid-stages to shape the arrangement, but as I approached the final stages, it became clear that they needed to be replaced. To bring the track to life, I worked with an incredible singer who delivered simple yet impactful lines. These vocals became the perfect finishing touch, seamlessly complementing the backing vocals, chords, and melodies to elevate the entire track.

Results

This track went through countless versions and demos, making it one of the most iterated pieces I’ve ever worked on. Among these was even a unique demo where all the chords and melodies were reversed, aptly named "reveN." Through all the experimentation, the final mix stands out as, in my opinion, one of my best works in recent years.

The clarity of the mix was a major focus, ensuring every element—from the intricate melodies to the atmospheric pads—shines through without overpowering the others. The drums play a crucial role, providing a crisp, driving rhythm that ties everything together while adding depth and energy throughout the whole track. In the end, all the elements came together better than I could have imagined, creating a track I'm truly proud of.
